Location

The history of Kissamos is lost in the depths of the centuries and is directly connected with the history not only of the prefecture of Chania, but also of Crete in general.

Evidence of Neolithic habitation has been found in the cave of Agia Sofia in Topolia, while (few but not insignificant) evidence of the existence of organized settlements during the Minoan era have been found in Nopigia, in the area of Chrysoskalitissa, south of Falassarna, in Viglia Gramvousa and in Kissamos. Throughout its history, Kissamos is developing a rich commercial and economic activity.

Its strategically important geographical position helped the seaside area with fertile lands in the north and northwest part of Crete and it is named as the Gate of Crete. Its geographical position, as well as that of Crete, was contested during the centuries by many enemies, (Romans, Arabs, Venetians, Turks) and warfare often erupted in order to conquer it.

The dreamscape of Elafonisi beach

When it comes to bucket-list swimming spots in Crete, Elafonisi beach makes quite a case for being right at the top. On some days it’s connected to the coastline of southwestern Crete, and on others it’s an island you can easily wade to through knee-deep water. One way or another, you’ll find an exotic paradise of fine white and pink sand (coloured by crushed shells), shallow turquoise water and gorgeous little coves. People come from all over Crete to see what all the fuss is about.

The tropic Balos beach

Situated by the northwestern Gramvousa peninsula, Balos should be inked in on everyone’s wish-list when they visit Crete. The exotic greens and blues of the water, the sweeping sandbanks and backdrop of Cape Tigani, and all the wild beauty of a Natura 2000-protected area… It’s an Instagrammer’s dream – especially from the viewpoint on your way down to the beach. The water is perfect for snorkelling at the boundaries of the lagoon, where it gets a bit deeper. And don’t forget to explore. You can stroll across the peninsula to the shrub-covered Cape Tigani, narrowly connected to the mainland, and climb to the chapel of Agios Pantes. The sunset view from here is fantastic.

The old town of Chania

You’ll discover its secrets step by step. The alleys are full of surprises and every stroll is an experience. Stand next to the picture-perfect lighthouse at the port, a 16th-century Venetian construction. Walk among the impressive buildings and attractions: the Küçük Hasan mosque, the renovated Grand Arsenal, the Splanzia ruins and the Kum Kapi at Miaouli Beach.

The Samaria Gorge

Just a few kilometres outside Chania is the renowned Farangas (Gorge), the largest and most famous gorge in Crete. Devote one day to exploring its 18km and see nature in all its glory. You may even meet the elusive and rare wild Cretan goat. When you reach the narrow passage (only 3km wide) at the end of the gorge, called Portes (also known as the Iron Gates), your adrenaline will soar, like the rock walls on each side, that reach a height of 300m. Your five-hour hike will end in Agia Roumeli where you’ll be rewarded with the swim of a lifetime.
